The panel of experts selects this year’s best dram after a blind tasting and assessment. For the year 2021, the judges of the International Whiskey Competition have a list of the top 10 whiskeys.
1. Drum Shanbo Single Pot Still
Whiskey made in a single still at the Irish distillery Drumshanbo and is the distillery’s very first release. The character is achieved by combining malted Irish barley and Barra oats with a creamy, spicy character. Oloroso sherry casks and bourbon used to mature this Irish whiskey. The nose is filled with the scents of dried fruit, sweet vanilla and spicy herbs. On the palate remain figs, oloroso sherry, incorporated into the aftertaste of the drink.
2. Project XX of Glenfiddich Distillery, Scotland
Brian Kinsman, Master Distiller at Glenfiddich Distillery in Dufftown, Scotland, is known as Project XX. He brought together 20 of the world’s most spirits from 16 different countries to create Project XX. She works together to create a specific whiskey that is truly unique. This Glenfiddich embodies the warm, fruity character of Glenfiddich with notes of apple blossom, summer fruit and ripe pear in a deep golden hue. Cotton candy, cinnamon spice, almonds and rich port tannins with a hint of liquorice are among the many personalities that emerge. 3. Gouden Carolus Single Malt Whiskey
To make Gouden Carolus Single Malt, the mash of the Gouden Carolus Tripel beer is distilled. The copper pot stills, which are used to distill the pure mash, are a first for Belgium. In the end, the distillate is completely clear and pure. ‘Anchor’ casks are used for additional aging, resulting in a rich whiskey with a rich and balanced flavour. Undertones of wood and vanilla bring out the best in the fruit making.
4. Tennessee Whiskey from Jack Daniel’s
Some people think that Jack Daniel’s is a Tennessee sour mash whiskey rather than a bourbon whiskey. With Jack Daniel’s you get something extra. A three-metre layer of charcoal filters the whiskey completely as it has been distilled. Softness is guaranteed by a 10-day filtration process. This distinguishes the whiskey from bourbon and other American whiskeys. It is also distilled using “Sour Mash”, a type of puree that has been fermented. In this fermentation technique, one third of the new yeast from the previous fermentation is mixed with two thirds of the new yeasts. As a result, the distillate has an improved flavor profile. Vanilla, caramel, oak and spices make up the flavor profile of Black Tennessee No. 7.
5. Taketsuru Pure Malted New 43%
Nikka’s Yoichi and Miyagikyo distilleries in northern Japan were used to make this single malt whiskey in honor of Nikka’s founder, Masataka Taketsuru, who is often credited as the “father of Japanese whisky.” Nikka’s master blenders use a range of whiskey styles to achieve this level of harmony, combining the fruity notes of young whiskeys with the rich, evolved character of older whiskeys, largely aged in ex-sherry casks. Inviting, fruity aromas fill the nose. Lots of peach and freshly pressed grapes are in this light and refreshing white wine. Pastry flavors of amandine, marzipan and biscuit are clearly present. 6. Wild Geese Single Malt
A single malt from the Wilde Ganzen distillery in Scotland. The single malt expression from the Wild Geese range of Irish whiskeys, which has won numerous awards, including Best Irish Malt (No Age) at the 2011 World Whiskey Awards. Golden malt and a little oak wood are combined with intense notes of plum and summer berries. Rich, buttery malt, followed by a vanilla sweetness later in the finish. 7. Jameson Select Reserve Black Barrel

Because it’s made with rye corn that is 70 percent of the grain, spring water from Cave Spring Hollow’s very own, and Jack’s time-honored charcoal softening process. One of the world’s finest rye whiskeys was created by master distiller Jeff Arnett and the whiskey makers of the Jack Daniel Distillery. One of their first new recipes in over 150 years. 10. Speyside Malt Whiskey Monkey Shoulder
William Grant’s Monkey Shoulder Scotch is an exceptional blend of single malt whiskeys from three renowned Speyside distilleries. To create a whiskey that is both smooth and complex, the distillers used a combination of malted and unmalted barley (where it really shines). There is a subtle nose of marmalade, Crema Catalano, cocoa and malt that is both elegant and stylish. Vanilla, nutmeg, cloves and cinnamon, with a hint of anise, round out the flavor profile. It has a creamy and malty taste with notes of berries. Butterscotch, cloves and roasted barley. The flavors of manuka honey, toasted bread and dried apricots come to the fore. Spicy oak with a peppermint aftertaste round off the aftertaste.
